Cooking Times way off Date: 2010-01-31 | Rating: 4 I purchased the model 150 for my parents over a year ago and it works great for frozen biscuits other frozen quick foods. I recently purchased the larger FC350 to replace my counter top convection/rotisserie oven. I first cooked a 4lb beef roast that came turned out good and haven't tried the rotisserie yet. The oven works great for pizza's, croquets, pizza rolls etc. Be prepared to increase the cooking times, the preset times are way off. If the box says 22mins, it's going to take at least 22 minutes. The real savings is the whole house doesn't get hot and there is no pre-heating. I live in South Florida and don't know if the high humidity has anything to do with the big difference in cooking times. I am very happy with the ovens results, just wish the company didn't mislead every one with expected savings in actual cooking time. I'd like to see a forum with real recipes from actual users. There is a reason most recipes are with frozen food... Date: 2008-08-16 | Rating: 3 This oven only does slightly better than a typical rotisserie or toaster type oven. If you are broiling a steak, unless you like your meat well done, you should start with frozen meat in order to get a browned surface with a pink center. The recipe book that comes with it only has a few examples and the pre-programed selections do not accomplish a proper product without adjustments to the time. It has a setting for rising crust pizza (like DiJourno) which starts with 14 minutes. A regular oven is 22 to 25 minutes. At 14 minutes, the pizza had risen but the crust was still very soft and the cheese was not even browned at all. I added time, and ended up at over 20 minutes with a pizza that was too soft and floppy. The same with frozen french fries. I expected a web site that would give more direction in how to use the oven but all the B & D web site has is the recipe book in pdf form. As far as the rotisserie, the oven is not really big enough to even accomodate a medium sized chicken. I did do a small pork roast which came out nicely done. But it had to be a small roast to not touch the element guards. For the price, I was rather disappointed. NOT Quicker Date: 2010-01-09 | Rating: 3 The unit functions adequately, in that it does cook things, but it falls far short of its major selling point which is that it is suppose to cook faster. Black & Decker went so far as to equip the oven with a `smart' timer which takes the conventional cook times and automatically shorten those cook times to what they claim is the oven's faster cook rate. This has actually become an annoyance in that we enter a cook time of 1 hour, then the oven translates that to 45 min and we have to go back and add the 15 min to adequately cook the item. In time we will learn to counter this conversion in our head, but we shouldn't have to. I have yet to study if there is any electric savings.

A correction on the info, the timer goes to 60 minutes not 120. I do NOT use mine to make toast. I have a standard upright toaster for that purpose. Anyone who buys a toaster oven to make toast can expect poor results. This product is meant to be used for baking and broiling. I have used it only for broiling so far and found it to do as good a job as my big range. Chicken, steaks, burgers broil up great and at about the same time it would take it a regular oven. When broiling use the top position with the rack facing upwards, getting the food as close to the heating elements as possible without actually touching them. This will insure thorough broiling and quicker cooking. Again, this all depends on what your broiling. Our old one was a simple, cheap one from Sunbeam, which lasted about ten years until the lever for toast broke. I never really wanted a "convection" toaster, but I decided to give it a try because I thought it might save energy when baking. It actually does a very fast job at that, much more efficient than the regular oven we used before. I used the broiler just once so far and it works well. Toast is very good: crunchy on the outside, moist inside (but that depends on taste). One gripe is with the knobs, which are hard to grab. The design of the knob is especially annoying in the timer, because it just sort of slides to the desired time, there's no way of precisely selecting the position, like a good stereo knob would. We haven't quite found the best spot on the timer for the perfect toast, I'm having to rely on visual clues and often just take the toast out before the timer rings. The tray is easy to clean and slides out conveniently. The hooks on the door hinges that make the rack slide out make it difficult to close the door completely - we decided to fold ours in and not use them, so the door closes correctly. For a 6 slice oven its a good size, not too big.The crumb tray slides out completely, that makes it easy to keep the oven clean. Please take the time to read the manual. It has a couple of good tips about using the oven. The toast function is fast. It does not use convection feature for toasting. I've baked eggplant and butternut squash in it. It takes almost the same time as a normal sized oven, but saves a lot of energy and does a good job. The broil feature works well too. I'm looking forward to baking pizza in it. We threw in a piece of food for a quick snack. Coming back earlier than normal to check on the progress, we found a freakin' fire inside. Mistake was opening the door (to put it out). Flames shot out overhead. Really frightening. Smoke was coming out the vents and the entire inside of the oven was engulfed in flames. Uh.... draw your own conclusions...

Rather than spend $40 every three years to replace the oven (and simply slide it into place), now I have to spend MUCH more and hang another version of B+D's infernal mounting devices. First: the oven is essentially the same as the old analog version. It has a digital temperature indicator, but I don't know if it's any more accurate than the former analog version. Also, the rack no longer has the little doo-hickey that would slide the rack out as you open the overn door. Mounting is typical B+D. Throw away the instructions and the mounting hardware, they will only frustrate you. I took the hood, temporarily fastened it to the cabinet with two C clamps, drilled starter holes through the mounting holes, then used my own screws and spacers to mount the oven hood. I used screws that were one-quarter inch longer than those supplied by B+D and spacers that fit more tightly on the screws (the B+D spacers were so loose, they recommended someone help hold the spacers rather than provide spacers that actually fit the screws) (SIGH). The oven works fine. No complaints. It does (as some mentioned) require three pokes at the buttons to toast (as opposed to simply pushing the lever on the analog model), but that's what's so great about technology for technology's sake: You can have a kewl digital display that requires more work and provides no discernable advantage, yet people still buy the product. For the price, it has many more features than ovens that are substantially more expensive. The oven feels solid and well built and looks very nice, the brushed stainless steel and black trim are quite sharp and it blends in easily with most modern kitchen appliances. There is no internal oven light but the elements glow enough for you to view the food through the clear glass front making it easy to check on the progress without opening the oven door. It is a bit larger than a standard toaster oven but can fit substantially larger items inside, including a 12 inch pizza. You should check the dimensions of the appliance before purchasing to make sure it fits your needs and your counters for that matter. The controls are mostly intuitive but you may have to fiddle around with it a few times before you get the hang of it. There are quite a few different options but they are self explanatory for the most part. The buttons are clearly marked with letters and a picture, which also shows up in the display when activated. The display is bright and easy to read with the digital timer and temperature setting flashing consecutively. The timer can be set for up to two hours, which is a rare find. The oven beeps with each button push and also beeps 3 times when the timer expires. It's loud but not obnoxiously so. The oven temperature can be adjusted by 5 degree increments which believe it or not is quite rare. Many other manufacturers have preset temperatures that don't always make sense and can not be altered, which is far from practical. The oven preheats quickly and seems to maintain a steady temperature with or without the fan. The fan is surprisingly quiet especially compared with some of the more expensive ovens. Food seems to cook evenly though you do need to make sure you keep items at least 2 inches from the top element or it will burn. Larger items will typically need to be rotated at least once during cooking to ensure even browning. Toasting takes a bit longer than a regular toaster so those of you new to toaster ovens, please keep this in mind. This oven does a nice job of toasting though you may need to adjust the rack and you do need to keep an eye on it until you find the setting that suits you best. The bagel feature is also nice as it toasts the top while only warming the bottom. The pans included with the oven are the standard broiler pan and baking tray as well as a pizza pan. The pans are a bit flimsy but many regular baking pans will easily fit into this oven and produce better results. Using the pizza pan for baking pizza will result in a very soft crust. If you want it crispy, bake directly on the rack. The rack can be adjusted to four different positions which allows for a bit more flexibility in terms of what you can fit inside the oven. Since the rack is adjustable it is not attached to the door so you have to manually slide it out to remove items but the door opens completely and lies flat so the access to the interior of the oven is easier. The oven does get quite hot but hey, it is an oven. Just make sure the oven is located in a place where hands would not come into contact with the sides, front and especially the top. Take note of the height of the oven and make sure that there is adequate clearance on the sides and top of the oven before purchasing. The bottom of the oven does not get hot so countertops should not be damaged. The glass door also gets quite hot but the handle remains cool. The crumb tray pulls straight out from the front and is completely flat so clean up is a snap. The interior of the oven is also easy to clean as is the outside of the oven. The power cord is a bit longer than usual which gives you added flexibility with placing the oven but you have to be careful the cord does not touch the sides of the oven as again, they do get quite hot. The push button quick settings are awesome, it even sets the appropriate time for perfect toast, bagels, pizza, potatoes, frozen foods, and yes, a 12" pizza will fit comfortably inside. It is spacious inside, does a commendable job of baking and toasting, and will accomodate my smaller airbake cookie sheets perfectly in the rack slots without having to use the rack in the oven. This method produced perfectly baked cookies, something I have found lacking in other toaster ovens. The convenience buttons are a no-brainer for my husband to use and get decent results, the traditional functions/controls work well for those more adept at baking and cooking. The slide out crumb tray is a big improvement over older models that had hinged doors and required hoisting and inverting the oven to clean it out. The inclusion of a pizza pan is a nice touch, too. Yes, it is larger than many, but when you want to do more than just toast two slices of bread, it opens up the door for a lot of possibilities. A few features I like about this one is the wire shelf is reversible, no surprise there, but turned one way, it has a wire lip that the enclosed tray can slide under attached, which helps during the baking process to catch any overflow drips. Then your baking pan can sit right on top of the rail. I also like the pull out crumb tray from the front, easy to clean and put al. foil. The sides have little hooks that the wire rack can slide into and it pulls out the rack a slight bit when you open the oven, makes it easy to grab your toast. The front handle is screwed in, all very secure. The cord is shorter than most, but I consider this a plus. Most people place the oven right by a plug anyway and too long of a cord gets in the way.
